Project Overview

The Civic Centre is located on 255 High Road, Wood Green, London N22 8LE and was the first civic centre of its size to be built from scratch after the end of the war.

The Grade II listed building will be fully redeveloped, providing the 66-year-old premises with a new annex, high-quality offices, and restored civic spaces which will be shared with the community in the heart of Wood Green.

Celebrating heritage and improving sustainability

We will restore the historic building to create a welcoming and functional space for residents and council staff, while celebrating the character and rich local history in the building.  The Civic Centre will also prioritise sustainability and eco-friendly design.

Accommodating more than 800 council staff and 100s of visitors, with space for local people and community groups, the new Civic Centre will be a source of civic pride in the borough.

Work is underway

We’ve been working in partnership with architects Hawkins / Brown and planning and heritage consultants Montagu Evans to make sure the plans protect and enhance the building’s heritage.

Design and building works are underway to ensure that all the historically important features of the building are preserved and restored, alongside the whole building being thoroughly modernised.

The refurbished building is expected to reopen in summer 2026, providing a modern landmark Civic Centre the whole borough can be proud of.

The Civic Centre refurbishment and expansion allows the council to consolidate its core office accommodation to one site, providing a modern, flexible, and accessible environment that will support how the council wants to work as an organisation in the future and to deliver for residents. The site will also allow the community to use the spaces within and around the Civic Centre building. Enhancements to the surrounding landscape will maximise public access, including a woodland garden area that will be co-designed with the local community.

A space for all

The refurbished Civic Centre will deliver:

  • Office space: The council’s offices will be moved to the Civic Centre and will be designed to allow more cross-departmental integration and collaboration.
  • Civic & Democratic Functions: The Council Chamber and Committee Rooms will be used flexibly for multi-purpose meetings, training seminars and conferences.
  • Shared Space: A multi-function co-work and collaboration area will be available for use of staff, partners and visitors by appointment, providing a variety of touchdown, collaboration, meeting and breakout spaces.

The new Civic Centre will be energy efficient designed using Passive Haus principles (a set of building standards that aim to create buildings that are comfortable and healthy yet consume very little energy) and there will be energy generation on-site.

This project is the first step in reducing the number of council offices in Wood Green to deliver savings and to free up our Station Road sites to support future economic and housing growth in the area.

Delivering high quality design

The project has been developed with reference to LB Haringey’s Development Management DPD Policy DM1: Delivering High Quality Design. The Quality Review Panel Report dated 18 Jan 2023 states:

"The panel warmly supports the proposals for the Haringey Civic Centre, which will give a valued heritage asset an extended lease of life in public service.

"The project team has responded well to the comments from the previous review (held on 27 April 2022) and presented a scheme that is sensitive, works well, and is in keeping with the spirit of the original building."
